A day after the Players Advisory Council met and a week after the apple cart was up ended over the Ping Wedges being in play, it seems the air has been cleared. Phil Mickelson stated in his press conference today that Scott McCarron had apologized for calling Phil a cheater. Phil commented “Scott came up to me yesterday and apologized, sincerely and I accept his apology.” and later went on to say “The process is ridiculous and the timing of it could not have been worse”.
Phil was fired up over the issue and in his own way took the bull by the horns and put the Ping Wedge into play last week knowing it would raise a bunch of eyebrows. What he didn’t expect was to be labeled a cheater.
Mickelson knew exactly what he was doing, he wanted to show the golf community how silly and ludicrous this rule and the process governing it is. “One man can’t be allowed to change the game, the rule making process need to change” he said in reference to the approval of one wedge versus another.
The rule has forced major OEM’s to retool plants spending millions, the tour had to hire extra staff to inspect, monitor and catalog every wedge on tour and it is too arbitrary. Mickelson, who normally very measured with his comments in the media didn’t hold back saying “…it’s killing the game.”.
What was so interesting to me is that he said he will not be playing the Ping Wedge this week but encourages other to feel free to do so. The best was when he said if others don’t push this issue and play the club then he would have to put it back into the bag. Point… I played it last week to show you guys how nutty and problematic this is and it must be dealt with NOW.
The rule as Phil indicated favors him and his current club setup because he has been playing the conforming V-Grooves since he was a kid. “The rule totally favors me and my game, but you have to remove yourself from the situation and look at it as what is good for our game.”
Funny how when Dean Wilson and John Daly threw it in the bag it barely got a stir but one of the games top player throws it in the bag and mayhem lets loose…..Lefty had this all planned out and pulled it off, just like another one of his great short game shots we all love to watch!
